James (Jim) B. Ackley
04.21.1927 ~ 03.27.2012
"What lies before us
And what lies behind us
Are tiny matters
Compared to what
Lies within us."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Jim, son of Harvey Ackley Jr. and Margaret Evana Schoonover, was born at the foot of Mount Shasta on his Uncle Howard's cattle ranch. Jim joined the California Department of Forestry before entering the Army at age 18.
Sergeant Ackley was honorably discharged two years later and joined the Santa Clara County Fire Department at the end of 1947. Jim was the founding member of that department and made Captain in 1954 and Battalion Chief in 1955. Jim retired at the end of 1978, honored and respected by his fire fighters, many of who remained friends far into his retirement.
Chief Ackley will be sorely missed. Thank you for your service.
