San José International Airport scene of major emergency drill

First responders from numerous South Bay agencies converged on the San José International Airport for a large-scale emergency response exercise on Monday, March 23, 2015. The exercise is staged in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration requirements intended to ensure that airport, fire, medical and law enforcement personnel are prepared in the event of a mass casualty event.

Lending realism to the drill were over 100 volunteers playing the roles of victims with injuries ranging from minor lacerations and bruises to patients suffering from severe trauma. All participants required screening and triage conducted by firefighters, paramedics and emergency medical technicians working together under a unified command.

Some of the participating agencies included the San José Fire Department, Milpitas Fire Department, Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, CAL FIRE, Santa Clara Fire Department, Mountain View Fire Department, NASA Ames Fire Department, San José Police Department, Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department, and the County of Santa Clara Emergency Medical Services.
