Driver dies when car plunges into San José pond
On Sunday, January 6, 2013 at approximately 2:40 PM units of the San José Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a vehicle that had crashed into a percolation pond in the area of Almaden Expressway and Highway 85.
Witnesses said the driver failed to turn left from Almaden Plaza Way onto the Almaden Expressway onramp to Highway 85 and instead headed directly through a fence plunging into the water. Initial attempts by bystanders and first responders to free the driver from the vehicle were unsuccessful.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff Underwater Search Unit responded and worked with firefighters to recover the deceased driver. The cause of the accident remains unknown and it appears that the driver was the only occupant of the vehicle. San Jose Fire units assigned included:
