Sunnyvale Resident Dies in Apartment Fire

On Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at approximately 3:30 PM, units of the Sunnyvale Fire Department responded to reports of smoke issuing from a two-story apartment building located in the Grove Garden Apartments at 243 Buena Vista Avenue. The first unit to arrive on scene reported a working fire in a first floor apartment extending to the second floor.

With the fire well-established and spreading rapidly, firefighters initiated a search of the structure while striking a second alarm bringing additional resources to the scene. Hand lines were stretched and an elevated master stream was placed into operation as fire suppression efforts were established.

Facing an extended operation Sunnyvale Fire requested mutual aid units from Santa Clara and Mountain View Fire Departments to backfill Sunnyvale's empty stations. Firefighters on scene were able to contain the blaze to the building of origin despite windy conditions that touched off a small spot fire on an adjoining structure's shake roof that was quickly extinguished.
