San José tire shop destroyed by three-alarm fire
Just after 10:00 pm, Monday, November 3, 2009 units of the San Jose Fire Department responded to a report of fire at Calderon Tires and Wheels located near the intersection of South First Street and Union Street just south of downtown San Jose.
First due Engine and Truck Company 3 arrived to find a well-established fire advancing rapidly throughout the length of the structure. Flames, fed by a heavy interior fuel load, consumed the structure's roof allowing flames to reach high into the night sky.
Incident Commander, Oscar Martinez, assisted by Safety Officer Juan Diaz, and Battalion Chiefs Gary Galasso, Gaudenz Panholzer, and Keith Keesling, conducted a defensive operation that required the use of multiple aerial master streams and numerous hand lines to protect exposures on at least two sides of the fire building.
Several residences were evacuated as a precaution, but firefighters were able to prevent flames from spreading to adjacent structures. The majority of fire was knocked down within approximately three hours, but crews remained on scene to monitor the burned out building for any flare ups.Are you a member of the fire service?
