Fire Levels Historic San Jose Church
On Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at 3:38 AM, units of the San Jose Fire Department responded to a major structure fire at 217 Delmas Avenue near downtown San Jose. Upon their arrival, first due Engine Company 30 immediately struck a second-alarm for additional resources due to the volume of fire and downed electrical lines.
Firefighters quickly assumed a defensive strategy deploying multiple aerial master streams to contain the blaze to the church and an adjacent trash pile.
The structure, an abandoned church built in 1903, had been used by transients for shelter, but it is not known if anyone was inside the building when the fire broke out.
Several weeks ago the San Jose Fire Department, responding to a report of a man down inside the church, discovered the body of a deceased 45-year-old homeless male. The death was ruled a homicide by the San Jose Police Department. There is no indication that this morning's fire is connected with the murder.
