Fire strikes San José pot dispensary for second time
On Friday, April 29, 2011 at 2:48 AM, units of the San José Fire Department were dispatched to a reported structure fire at a vacant medical marijuana dispensary located at 450 Drake Street. Firefighters aboard Truck Company 30 and Engine 3 arrived quickly to find a converted single-story home well-involved with heavy fire and smoke showing.
An adjacent home was significantly damaged when flames spread into that structure's attic space. Although firefighters were able to quickly douse the attic blaze, the house received enough damage that four occupants were displaced.
This was the second time that the main fire building has burned, with the previous fire having occurred during the early morning hours of January 12, 2011. During that blaze firefighters launched an aggressive attack to extinguish the fire. Unfortunately, this morning's fire had a head start that forced crews to assume a defensive strategy, including the application of several exterior hand lines, an aerial master stream and a deck gun.
Prior to the two fires, the 1,000 square foot structure housed the Herb Appeal medical marijuana dispensary. The dispensary had been closed since the first blaze four months ago.
