San José Fire confronts massive five-alarm commercial blaze
On Thursday, January 9, 2014, at 0536 hours, San José Fire Fighters responded to a rapidly spreading fire in a sprawling warehouse complex located in the 1300 block of East Julian Street.
The first engine to arrive advised fire communications that a major structure fire was already well-established in a 120,000 square foot industrial complex housing several businesses.
With flames advancing through the warehouse the fire began to impinge on numerous homes built adjacent to the complex. Multiple alarms were struck summoning dozens of engine and truck companies that quickly set about establishing a major defensive operation to contain the flames to the initial fire structures. Aerial master streams were put into operation while residents were advised to evacuate West Court, the street immediately west of the burning buildings.
As dozens of firefighters converged on the area explosions intermittently rocked the structure leading to the collapse of large portions of the warehouse roof. The businesses affected by the catastrophic fire include a plumbing, sheetrock and roof tile company as well as a hay and feed supply business.
Despite the size of the fire there were no injuries reported and firefighters were able to save all of the homes adjacent to the complex.UPDATE: This fire has been linked to a serial arsonist that has been apprehended and is likely responsible for over a dozen separate blazes in San José.
