San José's Bravest Battle Multi-Alarm Fraternity House Fire
On Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 3:21 AM, units of the San José Fire Department responded to reports of fire in a two story, multi-unit, fraternity house at 168 South 11th Street near the San José State University campus.
Upon arrival firefighters stretched attack lines through the front door and up to the second floor of the 20,000 square foot structure. Initial reports from interior crews indicated heavy smoke and fire conditions with flames spreading rapidly through the building's attic space.
Early reports suggest the fire may have started inside a laundry room on the second floor with students unsuccessfully attempting to extinguish the blaze as it breached the attic.
In all 28 students were forced from the building as firefighters quickly transitioned to a defensive operation deploying three elevated master streams and multiple hand lines from the exterior.
Unfortunately the fraternity house appears to be a complete loss after firefighters battled the blaze for several hours. One firefighter was treated and released from a local hospital after suffering burns to his hands. No civilians were injured.
