On Monday, January 9, 2012 at approximately 1:45 AM units of the San José Fire Department responded to reports of flames showing from the second floor of an eight-unit senior living apartment building located at 2645 Madden Avenue on the city's east side.
Arriving firefighters aboard Engine and Truck 2 discovered a well-established fire spreading rapidly from unit to unit and into the structure's attic. Engine 2 immediately deployed their deck gun using tank water, while firefighters went aloft to commence a trench cut to stop the advance of the fire.
With additional alarms struck, firefighters, police and neighbors worked quickly to evacuate residents and tend to their medical needs. At least five seniors were transported to an area hospital with mostly minor injuries. However, one victim did suffer significant burns to the feet.
It required approximately 50 firefighters and 90-minutes to bring the blaze under control. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
