San José Hazmat Incident Closes Health Center
On May 4, 2016, at 0943 hours, units of the San José Fire Department responded to the Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley, located at 1333 Meridian Avenue, after receiving a report of a chemical release inside the facility.
Firefighters and an ambulance task force were assigned to the incident after employees and patients were exposed to the chemical cresol, a dental sealant capable of causing skin irritation, breathing difficulty and headaches.
Of the 17 people exposed to the chemical, seven were transported to an area hospital for treatment. None of the patients suffered serious injury.
San José Fire Department’s hazardous materials team decontaminated several patients and made entry into the structure to mitigate the hazard. The incident was declared under control at 1208 hours. Assignment:
