San Martin: Fire Scorches Mobile Homes, Vehicles and Greenhouses
On Sunday, August 7, 2016 at approximately 1630 hours, firefighters from the South Santa Clara County Fire District, Morgan Hill Fire Department, CAL FIRE, Gilroy Fire Department, Spring Valley Volunteer Fire Department and the San Jose Fire Department responded to reports of a vegetation fire in the 14000 block of Murphy Avenue in San Martin.
Crews arrived on scene to find numerous vehicles, mobile homes, greenhouses and vegetation burning. Fire suppression efforts were immediately initiated to stop the spread of the fire, but were hampered when a large propane tank began to vent. Some firefighters on the north end of the fireground were pulled back due to the hazard presented by the burning gas.
Firefighters were assisted from the air by CAL FIRE Copter 106 and on the ground by the Alma Helitack Crew and handcrews out of Ben Lomond.
The fire displaced 13 people, including six children after their mobile homes were destroyed. The American Red Cross of the Silicon Valley was contacted to assist those affected by the fire.
