Santa Cruz Mountains Vehicle Fire Sparks Wildland Blaze, Threatens Homes
On Monday, June 27, 2016, at 1457 hours, firefighters from the Santa Clara County Fire Department and CAL FIRE responded to reports of a vehicle fire on southbound Highway 17 near the Redwood Estates exit.
The first crews to arrive on scene confirmed a working car fire with extension into the vegetation. The blaze moved rapidly up hill and into a densely wooded area making the fire difficult to reach.
As CAL FIRE air resources arrived over the fire, including a helicopter and tankers, the call went out for additional firefighters from departments throughout Santa Clara County. Crews from San José, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, NASA Ames and Mountain View responded to assist with structure protection and extinguishment.
Forward progress of the fire was stopped after approximately two hours. Firefighters remained on scene throughout the night and into the next day continuing mop-up operations and monitoring for any potential flare ups.
At the height of the fire some 20 homes were threatened, but the coordinated effort of firefighters in the air and on the ground prevented the flames from reaching any structures.
