Massive fire consumes commercial structure

On Saturday, July 3, 2010 at 1:52 PM units of the San José Fire Department responded to reports of fire in a single-story, multiple occupancy, commercial concrete tilt up structure at 1701 Rogers Avenue.

First due Station 5 equipment, located less than a mile away, reported heavy smoke showing while en route on the initial full-first-alarm. Upon their arrival Engine and USAR 5 advised of a working structure fire leading to an immediate second-alarm.

Crews stretched multiple lines and attempted to conduct roof operations, but the intensity and spread of the fire quickly forced firefighters to assume a defensive operation. Additional alarms were struck as the fire spread throughout the entire building endangering neighboring structures as embers were sent aloft.

Firefighters were able to successfully defend all exposures, but materials within the fire structure made offensive operations impossible. The fire building was a complete loss.
