Firefighters Control Two-Alarm Industrial Fire

On Sunday, August 23, 2010 at approximately 9:00 AM, units of the San Jose Fire Department, assisted by the Santa Clara County Fire Department, responded to a report of fire inside a tank containing heated tar at 690 Sunol Street.

The fire started when the tar was being transferred from one tank to another leading to a spill that ignited insulation material surrounding one of the tanks.

Due to the possibility of fire spreading to the contents of the tank, and the potential for the insulation to contain asbestos, the incident was treated as a hazardous materials event.

Approximately 60 firefighters worked for several hours to strip away the siding and insulation from the tank with the incident being declared under control in just over three hours.
