Three-alarm fire destroys San José nursery

On Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at 11:41 PM, units of the San José Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in the area of Almaden Expressway and Branham Lane in South San José. Upon their arrival, the first due engine company (Engine 13) reported a working fire at the SummerWinds Nursery located at 4606 Almaden Expressway.

As the fire spread rapidly throughout the 10,000 square foot retail structure firefighters established a defensive attack to prevent the flames from extending to any adjacent structures.

With multiple lines stretched and in operation it was determined that an appropriate course of action would be to allow the fire to burn off pesticides, insecticides, and fertilizer that were stocked inside the business. This would be the safest way to prevent hazardous materials from mixing with water and potentially running into the adjacent Guadalupe River.

The Santa Clara County Fire Department's hazardous materials team assisted San José by providing personnel and equipment to monitor the area for any potential contamination. Once the bulk of the material had burned off firefighters were able to extinguish the bulk of the fire within minutes.

Despite the size of the fire there were no injuries reported.
